BLACK-ON-BLACK CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM
The Derrick Brooks Charities Youth Programs' (DBCYP) Black-on-Black Crime Prevention Program is designed as a public awareness and education effort to motivate the Black community to support, promote, and participate in crime prevention programs and activities. The project will:
- Increase community awareness of the negative effects of Black-on-Black crimer and gain community support for the war againast crime.
- Educate and motivate Blacks to take a stand against crime in their communities and to work with their local law enforcement agencies to help eliminate the crime problem.
- Establish a collective network of individuals and groups who will establish community crime watch committees, street lighting campaigns, and other crime prevention measures and activities.
- Conduct surveys, which provide information on property security measures, such as dead bolts, security bars for doors and windows, and other protective features.
- Help to develop a crime prevention model that can be replicated in any Black community in the State of Florida.
- Implement strategies and activities that will motivate residents of targeted Black communities throughout the State of Florida to become actively involved in addressing neighborhood crimes through:
Residential Security Surveys
Trained, certified Crime Prevention Specialists will make recommendations to homeowners on how to better secure their residence.
Youth Club Meetings
Weekly meetings are held using the themes "CRIME IS NOT A PART OF THE BLACK HERITAGE" and "NOT HERE YOU DON'T!" Youth will learn how to prevent black-on-black crime.
Community/Church/School Events
Staff delivers behavior modification and self-esteem building classes to youth and parenting classes to adults in different settings.
Law Enforcement
The DBCYP will meet with local law enforcement personnel, at a minimum, eleven (11) of the twelve (12) months comprising the contract year to discuss program activities and objectives.
Trips
The DBYCP will identify four youth (two males and two females) and two chaperons (one male and one female) to attend two National Conferences.
- National Conference on Preventing Crime-In-The-Black Community sponsored by the Florida Attorney General.
- National Urban League or National Crime Prevention Council Conference.
