1ST & GOAL PROGRAM - SERVICES INCLUDED

Academic Services will provide programs designed to enhance the basic skill level of youth through tutoring, FCAT preparation, SAT/ACT preparation, and TABE preparation. This will enhance the youth's ability to achieve a high school diploma and be prepared to enter a post secondary education.

College Prep will prepare youth for a post secondary education by giving them the skills necessary to research and make educated choices about colleges, admission procedures, and financial aid options.

Youth will learn:

  • Different types of college and universities
  • Different scholarships and grants
  • Careers and related majors
  • Different types of degrees
  • College Admission Procedures
  • How to apply for Financial Aid
  • How to write a personal statement essay
  • How to complete a College Application
  • How to read a College catalog
  • The importance of SAT/ACT scores


Tech Prep will prepare youth for a post secondary education by giving them the skills necessary to research and make educated choices about occupational training programs, admission procedures and financial aid options.

Youth will learn:

  • Different types of occupational training

  • Careers and related majors
  • Admission Procedures
  • How to apply for Financial Aid
  • How to complete and Application
  • How to read a Course catalog
  • The importance of TABE scores


Career Exploration offers youth the opportunity to explore and experience a variety of careers along with developing marketable workforce skills through workshops, job shadowing, career experience and internships.

  • Career prep offers workshops that prepare youth to fully participate in job shadowing, career exposure, and internship activities.
  • Job Shadowing (age 14) - Half-day and full-day career experience that allow young people to be introduced to careers.
  • Career Exposure (ages 15-16) - A year round career exploration program that allow young people to experience different career opportunities in all industry levels for a certain time period, usually less than 100 hours.
  • Internships (age 17-18) - This paid or unpaid work experience consists of onsite supervised training in a specific field of work designed to improve the intern's occupational skills and readiness for the world of work. Interns will experience a detailed hiring process that includes completing and submitting a hiring application, interviewing process, and all other hiring paperwork and procedures. Interns learn about career opportunities in the non-profit, public, or private arena.

Leadership Development prepares youth for success by building confidence, integrity, self-esteem, character, respect, and personal responsibility.

  • Community Service is an opportunity for youth to help others within the community as well as improve youth's sense of responsibility for giving back. Each youth will volunteer four times a year in meaningful community service activities.
  • The Youth Council will empower the youth to actively participate in the development of programs and activities. The council will be used to create activities, enhance and monitor programs, recruit participants, assist with possible fundraising activities, and serve as a youth speaker's bureau for activities in public forums. The Youth Council will be formed by members of all three clubs.
  • Life Skills will focus on improving youth's basic, thinking, and personal skills. This includes, but not limited to goal setting, conflict resolution, stress and anger management, etiquette, public speaking, financial management, diversity, male enrichment, team building, creative writing, and character building.

Introduction to Technology will utilize Boys & Girls Clubs of America programs to teach youth high demand tech careers and internet safety.

  • Club TECH program will introduce youth to digital movie-making, music production, photography, graphic design, and web development.
  • Net Smart program is an interactive internet safety program that teaches youth how to safely navigate the web.
  • The Youth.net program gives youth the opportunity to make friends and interact with other Boys & Girls Club members from across the country through safe and monitored internet chat room.

Referral Service will be offered to youth in need of assistance outside the scope of the program. Hillsborough County 211 Social Service Referral Hotline will be utilized to properly refer youth and their family to services within Hillsborough County. In addition, we will partner with social service agencies in the city and county in order to effectively address any emotional, sociological, physical, or mental issues young people may be experiencing.
